If reading is such a pleasure, why would anyone want to speed it up? I can understand why one would prefer to speed read a boringly dry academic text book, but reading great works of fiction can be a joyful experience that should be savored. Don't speed read; slow read.

Interesting article. I didn’t even realize about the subvocalization, I don’t recall ever doing that. From the time I was little, I actually tried to slow down my reading because I finished books too fast and had no access to new ones . . . when I was 8 or 9 I would read books upside down so it would take longer. Now, as an adult with very little free time, I’m pretty happy I have the ability to read fast!

Pointing definitely helps. Not subvocalizing for me is very hard to do, but I don't mind. Nearly all of my reading is done for pleasure, and I tend to read reasonably fast. Although nothing like some of the speed readers on here! I have managed to read 62 books so far this year. I'll have to try not subvocalizing. Great article!

Good post. My biggest struggle is the "Active Reading" part. Way too often I'll be reading, 20 minutes will pass, and I realize I hardly absorbed anything... mainly because my mind is wandering, and I'm more just going through the motions vs. actively reading, paying attention, and seeking out the information I want. ITIL Certification

Excellent tips - #1 is an oldie but a goodie :-) I still feel a little embarrassed when I'm on a train or in another public area as I scroll my finger across the page, Lol. Maybe one of these other tips can take its place! Social Worker

This is great! There is one thing I do recommend though, spreeder.com.
It's a site that paces your readings for you so you won't have to use a pointer and you can set your words/minute to the exact measurement. Also, you touched up on the "upper-reading-limit" - there's something I wanted to add to that. You want to read at your normal pace for a good 1-2minutes, then speed up the pace by 1.75x for 30-45seconds, and finally drop the pace down to 1.25x the original pace for 1 minute. This is proven to work because you are pushing your upper bounds then dropping it will seem like you adjusted back to your original speed.
